Cardiovascular

What we do

Established in 1983 by Dr. Toyama—who honed and practiced cardiovascular surgery in the United States for over a decade—our department provides high-safety, quality-of-life (QoL) focused surgical care. We welcome patients from across the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan Area and beyond, helping them achieve excellent outcomes and a rapid return to daily life.

To ensure continuous, high-quality emergency and critical care, our surgeons, specialized nurses, and clinical engineers reside near the hospital, fully prepared to deliver optimal surgical treatment 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Department Highlights & Advanced Surgical Capabilities

Rooted in American healthcare standards, our department emphasizes subspecialized expertise and patient-centered, highly accurate surgical interventions:

Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (OPCAB / Off-Pump CABG): For angina and myocardial infarction, we prioritize long-term graft patency by using the patient’s own arterial conduits. We perform beating-heart (off-pump) bypass surgery as our standard to minimize surgical stress on the body.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) & Valve Repair: For valvular heart disease, our primary goal is maintaining optimal post-operative quality of life while minimizing the long-term need for anticoagulation medications (blood thinners). We actively perform Right Mini-Thoracotomy MICS (even for elderly patients) to reduce recovery time. When valve replacement is required, we carefully select the most suitable prosthetic valve through thorough patient shared decision-making.

Surgical Treatment for Arrhythmias: We actively perform surgical ablation for arrhythmias (such as atrial fibrillation) concurrently with valve procedures, allowing many patients to avoid long-term anticoagulation therapy post-surgery.

Aortic Aneurysm Repair (TEVAR / EVAR): To prevent life-threatening aortic ruptures, we perform both open surgical repair and minimally invasive endovascular aortic repair—including Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) and Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR)—ensuring high safety profiles even for high-risk patients.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR / TAVI): In close collaboration with our Cardiology team, our cardiovascular surgeons actively participate as primary operators in catheter-based TAVR/TAVI procedures.
