Hematology

What we do

The Department of Hematology / Oncology at Kameda Medical Center was established in 1990. As a central facility for the treatment of leukemia, malignant lymphoma and myeloma primarily in the  Boso Peninsula, we have been treating many patients. Currently, 70-80 patients are hospitalizedat any given time, making it one of the largest treatment facilities for blood diseases in Japan.

For medical treatment in the ward, in addition to 6 staff members above the senior resident level , 1 to 2 junior resident doctorsassist us in treating patients. We have already gained a lot of experience and achievements in the treatment using bone marrow transplantation, peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, etc.  Bone marrow transplantation was started in 1990, and the number of allogeneic stem cell transplant attempts has exceeded 400.The number of transplants in the last three years has been around 15 cases per year. We are also actively performing autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for malignant lymphoma and multiple myeloma, and more than 200 autologous transplants have been performed so far. As a facility to do this, 36 beds including 16 beds in the aseptic room on the 9th floor of the K tower, and 42 beds including 2 private rooms on the 8th floor of the new A tower have always been in full operation.

Conditions we handle

ron deficiency anemia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, megaloblastic / malignant anemia, leukemia, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma

In hematology / oncology department, medical treatment is mainly performed on hematopoietic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and MDS, but solid chemotherapy can be obtained by powerful chemotherapy such as small cell lung cancer and sarcoma. Patients with tumors, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and ITP are also being treated with aggressive chemotherapy.

Number of cases

In hematology / oncology department, medical treatment is mainly focused on hematopoietic malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and MDS. Recently, about 60 to 70 inpatients have been treated in our department. In addition, evidence-based treatment is also performed for patients with blood diseases other than malignant tumors such as aplastic anemia, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, ITP, TTP, and other hemorrhagic diseases.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation already started in our department 20 years ago, and the total number of allogeneic stem cell transplantation has reached 160 cases to date. In addition to unrelated bone marrow transplants via bone marrow banks, many cord blood transplants are also performed. Especially, the average age of patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is high in the latter half of their 50s, but the results are good. Treatments using hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have been used for various diseases in recent years due to the introduction of mini-transplantation, etc. We are actively engaged in this, and we believe that it can be expected for solid cancer and severe autoimmune diseases in the future.
